Rodney Mott - Artist Statement
Ceramics
Since my freshmen year in high school I have been hooked on art, the spinning of mud into pots, bowls, cups, and getting dirty. Throughout my journey of becoming an artist, I have been inspired by Picasso paintings, Cretian figurines, Greek bronze, Japanese Haniwa, Modigliani, Missippian mound builder pots, and Noguchi parks to create and share the past with people of the present and move towards the future.  Now 36 years later, my family and home nurture my ability to create.  What a journey it has truly been. Rodney Mott Through my experience of being a potter, Art Instructor, poet, and father, I have been given a different kind of voice than the average person, as I speak through clay, a canvas, or a piece of paper and pen.  As history shows art's commitment to culture, never being absent that is, as my art shows to my family and students of being present mark leading us into the future.

As an artist the main reason for me to work is the thrill that I get from working, the goose bump-Christmas morning aura that comes with creation.  The opportunity to decide what color, what medium, what thickness, what size, when to be done, then when to begin again.  Being an artist has been a life long journey, which I would do again in a heartbeat.  Not everyone gets the chance in life to be burdened and blessed at the same time as an artist does.
